Advantage and Disdvantage of Social Media for Business

Social media has become a very important tool to spread your messages. It is used by many people as a channel to communicate with each other. Using social media is also a good marketing or advertising technique to reach your target customers and expand your business network.

There are many aspects to social media and some may be more suitable for your business than others. Social Media provides many beneficial features while also causing several problems that you may not know about. The overall result is that social media is both advantageous and disadvantageous to your company.

Advantages of Social media

- It is low cost. The cost of an ad in most publications is much higher than on Facebook or Twitter

- It's more effective. One study shows that Facebook ads are almost twice as effective as Google AdWords (with Google being the only cost-effective option)

- Reach large audiences. Most people tune into their favorite news source, such as Twitter, to find updates on their favorite celebrities, sports teams or companies. According to one study by BrightEdge, 84% of online users follow their favorite brands on Twitter, and another study by MarketingCharts found that 76% of all online visits occur after a user has discovered a company through social media

- Speed. When posting information about your product or service on social sites, you can reach an audience faster than through newspaper ads or banner advertisements, which can take weeks to be seen by prospective customers

Disadvantages of Social Media

- Accountability. We all learn from our mistakes, and while that's good, no one likes to see them on someone else's page. What if one of your employees or customers posts something embarrassing? How do you distance yourself from the situation?

- Personal information. As much as we want to share everything about ourselves online, we don't want anyone else to know too much about us, either. Sharing too much information on social media can compromise your privacy and make people less willing to follow you or engage with your content.

- Privacy concerns. There are many different types of social networks and communities, each with their own rules and regulations regarding what's appropriate content, who can view it and how it will be presented. There are also many different types of users in each community — family members, co-workers, friends and acquaintances — so how do you moderate them all? It can get pretty complicated when you factor in the privacy issues.

If you're thinking about adding social media to your marketing mix, above are a number of advantages and disadvantages to consider.
